Danes Arrest Muslims in Terror Plot
(Copenhagen, Denmark) Four male Middle Eastern Muslims, aged 16 to 20, have been arrested in Denmark on suspicion of planning a suicide terror attack in Europe.
From the BBC:
The arrests were linked to a recent inquiry in the Balkans in which arrests were made and large quantities of explosives were found, police said.
No details were given of the intended target of the group's alleged plot.
"We suspect the four young men of being participants in preparation of terrorist acts somewhere in Europe," said police spokesman Joern Bro.
The suspects are closely linked to three men arrested previously in the Balkans for planning an attack on the British or American embassies in Sarajevo. A tipster in an unnamed Balkan nation led to the arrests.
Notably, most of the reporting on this story is referring to the suspected terrorists as 'men.' In my opinion, 16-year-old boys are not men and at least one of the suspects is 16. The thought of having boys running around Europe with terrorism on their minds is frightening. Boys usually can mingle anonymously in society since they are not old enough to have graduated from school, nor to have a work history, nor to have been in the government or military. Typically, there are no photographs nor fingerprints. Spooky.

Sixteen is a whole different matter in Europe. Whereas the U.S seems to revolve around the age of eighteen, in Britain I could legally purchase, and smoke cigarettes, leave both school and home,and sex was considered consensual.

It's not all that suprising really. Look at how many times the IDF has stopped early teen Palistinian terrorist wannabes at checkpoints. With the hatred these guys are fed constantly, the trend is bound to show up elsewhere in the world. I guess we'll hear how the Danes are the guilty ones because they didn't do enough to integrate them, yada, yada, yada.

I noticed the same thing at a muslim wedding I photographed last year. The two families were pretty much all first and second generation Pakistani-Americans, with a few old-country visitors and recent arrivals. The older ones, the original immigrants and the adult or near adult children who were born here, were all pretty much Americanized, especially the girls, who though being dressed in native clothing, weren't at all shy about me photographing them and who sounded just like any girl in any mall across America.
The difference I noticed was in the boys under 21, who were mostly sullen and kept glancing at me and my wife, who were two of the only three white people there, the third being a guy who converted to marry a muslim girl. The looks they gave me were nothing short of suspicious and hostile, and I suspected that they are products of a combination of normal male teenage angst and confusion and a feeling of alienation from the only society they've ever known. They are strangers in their own country, yet it isn't their own country.
I make no excuses for the bad behavior of anyone, and even less so for anyone who has been given every consideration and opportunity in a society that accepts all without judgment, but I do understand how young muslims males can become so easily radicalised. The only viable solution I can see is to strengthen the rules allowing deportation so that when these boys are clearly failing to assimilate, they should be sent home.

TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- A Florida school district has decided that students will get no religious holidays from school after a debate over which religion should get the days.
Hillsborough County School Board members approved the 2006-2007 school year calendar with only three holiday days off -- Labor Day, President's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Tampa Tribune reports.
Ahmed Bedier of the Council on American-Islamic Relations had hoped for a day off of school for the Muslim holy day of Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan.
Bishop Chuck Leigh of the Florida Council of Churches said the board made a mistake in not granting the Muslim holiday.
But school board attorney Tom Gonzalez told the board that it was wrong to close the school for any religion.
Students who miss class for a religious holiday will not be penalized.
Wow, I was all set to do a throwdown on this school district, because at first glance it appears that they're inconveniencing everyone just to appease CAIR. Typically, that's how these things tend to work. See: 10 Commandments monuments, et.al.
But then I took a look at my kids calendar for school, where no CAIR member dare to tread, and here are the single day holidays:
Labor Day
Martin Luther King Day
President's Day
Memorial Day
So I thought, hm, they've axed Thanksgiving to appease CAIR, but then I dug out the (PDF alert!) school calendar mentioned in the article, and there it was.
What about Christmas? Still off, because it falls under the politically correctly monikered Winter Break.
So, we can give this school district kudos for telling CAIR to shove it, albeit in an offhand way. All they did was put out a press release saying that they're going to keep the same days off that they did before, but, by adding the religious angle, they get CAIR off of their backs.
There is a dark side to the tale, however. I took a look at the calendar for (PDF alert!) this school year, and compared it to the one for next, and there was a single day holiday eliminated.
Veterans Day. (if you're wondering about Memorial Day, a look at the calendar shows these schools let out before then)

DId u even read the story? The school, which has a large muslim population, asked the board to recognise Eid, since it recognises christmas and 2 jewish holidays. Fair enough, ud think but this being america, the school decided to rescind ALL religious holidays instead of giving muslim students whats they deserve.

Jason, I don't know what story you read, but I read four accounts of this and never once saw any particular school mentioned nor a "large Muslim population" in any one school or the district itself. Sources, please.
Kids and teachers have had Christmas holidays and Easter holidays for many decades. Then they were forced to name them "Winter Break" And "Spring Break" so as not to offend anyone. Now some want to add more holidays to the curriculum. Next, the Wiccans will want something like "Gaia Day" off, or the Buddhists will want their own "New Year's Day" off. The ACLU and other groups have fought long and hard to keep religion out of it and now the Muslims want to add religion back to the mix. Do you think the ACLU will fight it? I doubt it.
CAIR has been trying to get the government to release an actual statement recognizing Islam as "one of the world's great religions" and this is just a backdoor attempt to get it done. Is the ACLU against this? Haven't heard a peep.
It's time to just leave well enough alone. They said no student will be punished for taking their religious holiday off. I think that's enough.

Veterans Day next year falls on a Saturday. And I would rather that my sons attend school on Veterans Day. Then they get to hear from actual Veterans and meet the true heroes in our community.

I think the progression of your thoughts and feelings beginning with outrage and ending with taking a deeper look at the issue is a typical one. I was also angered at this story but there are some very important questions that do need to be dealth with the most relevant being - When does a traditional judeo-christian nation like ours have enough diversity that we have alter our traditional view of religious holidays? If half the country converted to Islam would we hold on to our Christian government sponsered holidays just for the sake of tradition?

We've already reached that point. While individually we have not altered our views, as a nation we have. Hence the politally correct non-mention of "Christmas". As Easter falls on Sunday, and most people don't work on Sunday anyway, the only other ones are Good Friday, which is not as widely recognized in the workplace, and Christmas Day. And it depends on what business you're in as to whether you get ANY holidays of ANY kind off.
But, you missed the point entirely. This is school. Remember? Where no religion is supposed to be mentioned? You know - "Winter Break" rather than "Christmas Vacation" and all that? Now they want another day declared off for "religious purposes" when we're not supposed to have religion in our schools. So what do we do now? Abolish winter break because one day out of two weeks is a Christian holiday? Or shift it so that Christmas Day is not in that two week period in order for a minority not to be offended?
As they said, "Students who miss class for a religious holiday will not be penalized." This is the respectful thing to do - not declare another holiday for religious purposes which a majority of students will not be celebrating as they are not Muslim.

Simple fact: the majority of people in this country celebrate Christmas in one way or another, be it religiously or commercially. If you held school on those days it would be a waste because no one would be there. And I teach, so trust me, those teachers that didn't get approved for personal days would be calling out sick. I'm also aware of a county in a neighboring state that has off for the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, because of the large Jewish population among students, but also staff. The fact that they wouldn't have enough substitutes, warrants those days off.
As for holidays, who can I complain to that I no longer have off for Columbus Day? I remember as a kid spending a week before talking about the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. Now he's a murdering bastard and the students don't know anything about him. Oh well, at least when they did away with the Columbus Day holiday around here, they gave back the Veteran's Day holiday.

Stop Attacking the American Journalist
Thats the title of an
article in the Yemen Times defending me by Abdulkarim al-Khaiwani, the Yemeni editor the bloggers helped me circulate a petition for. He was granted amnesty a week later (this was back in March.) Sometimes payback is not a beeyotch.
It discusses the Yemeni regime's attempts to contact me before they decided to start calling me a Zionist and numerous other nasty names in the governmental papers.
So this line is pretty funny: The question, which has been raised, is that how is it possible for the PresidentÂ’s journalist Mr. Sanabani to meet a Zionist writer.
Is that snark? Translated from Arabic it still comes through as snark.

hey Howie, I thought it was pretty damned cool myself. i was getting trashed BADLY by the yemeni government newspapers. And it took me a week to figure out the one article where the yemeni government said I had the culture of the soldiers at abu ghraib, that is was probably a sexual reference. so i dont hear it all but when this guy comes out swinging for little jane the neo-con blogger, then things must be going on the right track. because al-khaiwani is an astounding guy. not only did he refuse the offer one month into his sentence to apologize and get out of jail. but when he got the amnesty six months later, he refused to leave his cell in prison because his rights are not a gift. he wanted them affirmed by the court not bestowed by the president. his friends had to drag him out. so for this guy to be standing with me is a HUGE honor. seriously. i have the greatest repect for him. he lives it. and plus he's a great writer in arabic and the government shut him down. they took his paper and threatened the other papers if they publish his articles against the regime. so im appreciating Rusty for letting me get him more name recongition. because its not over, the regime hates us both. but he's there in Yemen with no rights. and im here with the bloggers, my buddies. a lot of people know al-khaiwani already, soon it will be more.

The excuse given is that they don't want to "inflame" the American public. I also wonder why it is that virtually none of the MSM reported the fact that:
A) the attack was an attempt to take them all hostage (and we know how that usually ends upÂ…ask John The Baptist)
B) the attack was repelled by the Iraqi Security Forces, you know, the ones that canÂ’t shoot straight unless an American Solider is holding the gun.
I had a sliver’s thread holding on to the notion that just maybe the MSM was “trying” to report things fairly. The “reporting” of this attack cut that last thread of dignity.

Yes you know the terrorist released some crap saying they were after some security company they consider Israeli spy stuff. But I just keep thinking of the equipment and hostages. If they just wanted to kill just a bomb would have worked. No they wanted in and were driven off by Iraqi forces. How embarrasing. There were some Americans too but Iraqi forces are getting better. It may take quite a while but I'm feeling better about the war. I'm all opposite you know. If you listen to the MSM you would think we were on our last leg. Sorry but I know what this country can do if it puts it's mind to it. If the left only cared about Iraqi rights as much as they care for their own. My only worry is that the last month or two politics has went beserk on us. Distracting from the real work to be done in the world and here.

Just talked to one of my fishing partners. His $800.00 home at Eden Isles (Slidell, La) sustained major water damage. So he moved to one of his condo's (that happened to be empty) on Lake Huron in Michigan. Fema send him $2,000.00 to help with his relocation. They also sent him $2350.00 for addition rent expenses. Let me see here. He moves from his beautiful home on the water in La. to his condo on Lake Huron and the tax payers pay the bill???? He also lost a fancy moter coach. His moter coach, boats and home are fully insured and the guy has millions. Way to go Fema.
The Fema employees brought from out of state at great expense have to travel 45 minutes to work from the tax paid for motel they are staying in. They also get meals paid for. They are working 66 hrs per week. NOW GET THIS. They are paid at an overtime rate for the 2 1/2 hrs per day they drive to work buddied up 4 to a car. THE WORKING PEOPLE paying the bill don't get paid overtime for sitting in traffic or driving long distances to work.
The idea behind FEMA is good. The actual management is horrible.

Greyrooster, I was watching some of the people in queues for Water and bags of Ice on CNN. Now bare in mind that this was a little over forty-eight hours after the Hurricane -- people actually had the nerve to start attacking FEMA saying that they did not provide enough water or Ice.
Why is it in todays society people feel like the Government should be their wet nurse? With all the warnings about the Hurricane they couldn't buy enough bottled water, fill water containers or even their bathtub? couldn't have stocked a cooler with ice?
You'd almost think we lived in a nation of "Old Mother Hubbard's" that don't have enough Food, or Water to survive 3-7 days?
I personally don't rely on the Government for anything in my life, and I sure wouldn't be relying on them to provide me food/water/shelter in the event of a natural disaster. I'm not why some people don't take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

We can discuss class all we want, but the fact that you dodged the "race question" confirms my original statement. It's being reported that Miers talked to President Bush last night and asked if she could withdraw.
From the Chicago Tribune:
President Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.
"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers -- and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."
Washington is stunned by the news since the withdrawal of a nominee is quite
unusual. It has occurred with only seven of 150 nominees in the history of the Supreme Court.

I'm great I used to have to study the bible and go through life to determine right and wrong but now since the Feds and corporations showed me in plain black and white thay they have clear title to my body I've stopped all that.
What do yo do now?
I just read the Federal code of law and the company policy book. They tell me just what I can't put in my body, Where I can go, What I can do, who I can hang with and that my money still belongs to them even after I get the check for my work and I should spend it where they tell me to. Saves me a whole lot of trouble. Freedom was so burdensome I had to make all kinds of descisions. Now that I'm a slave I'm happy. Big load off my mind.

Judge Orders Release of Gitmo Records
Lawyers representing hunger-striking Guantanamo Bay detainees have
convinced U.S. District Court Judge Gladys Kessler to order the government to inform detainees' defense lawyers at least 24 hours before any force-feeding and to provide the lawyers with medical records weekly.
Julia Tarver, a lawyer for three of the detainees, asserted in court papers that when she visited her clients she found them weak and sometimes able to speak only with difficulty because of throat lesions they said were caused by having the feeding tubes forced in. Ms. Tarver said one detainee, Yousef Al-Shehri, told her that a feeding tube had been roughly inserted through his nose into his throat, causing him to spit up blood.
Notably, without the forced-feeding, the detainees likely would have died and, according to the government, none have.
Judge Kessler acted on an emergency petition because it was "deeply troubling" that detainees had feeding tubes inserted without sedatives or anesthesia.
"If the allegations are true - and they are all explicitly, specifically and vigorously denied by the government - they describe the conduct of which the United States can hardly be proud," the judge wrote.
Although Kessler directed the government to provide notifications and records, she denied the request for the lawyers to have immediate telephone access to the detainees.
It seems that Judge Kessler's decision is based exclusively on the adequacy of the medication administered to the detainees prior to inserting the feeding tubes. Her ruling indicates that the detainees are not sufficiently drugged before having a tube shoved up their noses and down their esophaguses. I must assume that there have been past cases where judges have determined the amount medication to be administered. I'm personally uncomfortable with the idea. In my estimation, no amount of legal training and experience prepares a judge to practice medicine.
Nevertheless, ordering the release of medical documents will surely prompt the detainees' lawyers to start searching for other issues to litigate. The latest wrangling over the medication issue is part of an ongoing campaign by human rights advocates to force the government into giving the detainees more legal rights.
It's unknown whether the government will appeal.

I've never really understood why we can't just leave them to starve. everyone else has the right to commit suicide in any way they like. I know there's the argument about providing martyrs for the cause, but I'm not convinced that decades of what amounts to torture deflates any of that!
Same with the dirty protests in Ireland in the 70's. If they want to paint their cell walls in excrement & sit in it, let them.
Of course this only applies if you belive they are capable of making rational decisions. But if you don't, then they should not be in prison in the first place, as they can not have commited a deliberate crime.

If things keep going the way they are, it won't be long before the military will have to ask a court for permission to drop a bomb. One wonders how a war can be fought with constant court interventions, and one wonders where all the money is coming from for these people. If I had to guess, I would bet the money is coming from the US government, as stupid as that sounds. The money has to be coming from someplace, perhaps even foreigners. This needs to be looked into. Sure wish we had a media.

As for your concern that a war can't be fought with judicial involvement, have you ever heard of the concept of inalienable rights? It's this novel idea our FOUNDING FATHERS talked a bit about in our Constitution. And while they were using it in reference to the people of the United States, they were saying that it was applicable to all people. In fact, that's the whole reason we're fighting this war in Iraq, isn't it? Our action is based on the notion that Iraqis have the same inalienable rights, and their government should reflect this fact.
If we are not consistent with those beliefs in the way we treat prisoners of war, we will lose the central battle here -- the moral battle, the battle of ideas.

I was a newspaper editor for a small daily while in college, and had wanted to make it my career. I know a little about the media, especially the AP, through my experiences with them and other actors in the newspaper business.
I do not claim to have any special knowledge about the Constitution, other than what any citizen might gain from a reading of it. I do not believe I read anything in the Constitution that gave particular rights to the enemies of the United States, and most particular to persons who attack the US without the benefit of fighting for a recognized party under certain treaties signed and duly ratified by the US Senate. But I freely admit I could be wrong.
And yes, I admit I want the Iraqi people to have the same basic rights I have, but the insurgents are the ones trying to prevent that, i.e. we are in a conflict with them. They are not recognized as combatants by treaty or international law, so I must assume they should not receive the same treatment as a POW under international agreements. If I am wrong, please correct me, because I admit to not having specialized knowledge in this field.

Mrs. A, Should they also be force fed if they choose not to eat or, left to die as they wish? I recently read the menus for the detainees at Gitmo. It turns out that we are providing over $12 of food a day to the detainees and less than $9 a day to the military working there.
It is my belief that if a person chooses not to eat and, they are fully capable of feeding themselves and offered decent food, than you should let them starve to death. Choice, isn't that what America is all about?

Babs, please see my first comment. I believe they have every right to commit suicide in any way they think will be fun. Starvation doesn't rank particulalrly high in my book, but each to their own.
However, if you agree they are criminals, convicted of murder/treason whatever, they should be treated as criminals, which in America I believe means they should not be tortured, injured, forcibly starved etc. If you believe they are POW's, they should be treated under the codes of the Geneva Convention. If you think you need to invent a new category of detainee for terrorists, you need to draft/pass a law explaining their status.

Iran to launch recon satellite
I know a few things about Iran but I was not aware that
they had a space program. Well, actually, they are shooting a Chinese "Sina" satellite on top of a Russian rocket from a Russian launch pad. So they outsourced it. But pretty soon they'll have an eye in the sky--several, actually, with more launches planned.
Why are they doing this? Iran's embassy in Moscow "said Sina would be capable of monitoring natural disasters and urban growth."
Oh, right. Sure. Got it. Mmmhm. Yep.
If you believe that's what it's for, you probably just can't wait for that peaceful, energy-generating Iranian nuclear program to come on line.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were a catastrophic "systems failure" in the Iranian Satellite once it gets up in space, delivered via some sort of ECM (Electronic Counter Measure) from our own Satellites.
I doubt the idea of an enemy state launching a Satelite hasn't been taken into account, and planned for.

I'm sure there were some NASA geniuses who beat their wives, snorted coke, and read child porn, yet they still managed to launch a few astronauts onto the moon when they came to work. While you're correct in stating civilized behavior is not part of their outlook on technology, you have to look at where the experience/materials for their nuclear program is coming from.
1. Scientists from other Nuclear nations (Pakistan/Russia) and Scientists educated in the West.
2. Large construction projects from Russia (Bushehr reactor) which Russia is also supplying the seed fuel for.

dave, you are correct in what you're saying, but what's also being left out is the amount of foreign assistance many countries receive with their various technological endeavours. Besides, the whole point is that countries do catch up, whether it's their own scientists making discoveries or with the help of others. That's usually how societal technological advances occur. The point isn't who gets help from where. It's the fact that at some point, the technological playing field gets levelled.

Or perhaps the leveling of the playing field comes from the stagnation of technology in the more sophistocated society. I remember that Rome, the city, finally disintergrated only after the aquaducts that brought water into the city were destroyed by the barbarians. The population of Rome dropped from about 1,000,000 to less than 10,000 in a very short period of time.
The type of government that Iran has is not likely to let its people have enough freedom to be productive. The only thing Iran has going for it is oil, and hopefully that will be less valuable as we go forward. Iran and the other Religo-Fascist states of the Mideast have a window right here, right now, where they will wield power out of proportion to their economies and population, but it will not last long in my opinion. China is a threat to the east, India is a threat from the south, and that is why they are aiming the jihad at the West.
If, and this is a big if, Europe can find the WILL to stand up and fight, the Islamists will fail miserably. Their only chance is in the West, where they have useful idiots who support them, and a population on the decline. These two things work in their favor in the short run, but the US is the wild card here, and they know it. That is why they want to run the US out of the Mideast so badly. If we stick, the Islamists will be defeated. If not, Europe will probably fall, and who knows what might happen.

Kerry: Bring 20,000 Troops Home from Iraq
The irrelevent one speaks. Odd position considering it wasn't long ago he was
screaming for more troops. Obviously been hanging at the Waffle House again.
Sen. John Kerry says President Bush should bring home 20,000 troops from Iraq over the Christmas holidays if the December parliamentary elections there are successful.
Defeated by Bush last year and a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, Kerry called for a "reasonable time frame" for pulling back troops rather than a full-scale withdrawal advocated by some Democrats. He said it could be completed in 12 to 15 months.
"It will be hard for this administration, but it is essential to acknowledge that the insurgency will not be defeated unless our troop levels are drawn down, starting immediately after successful elections in December," Kerry said in a speech prepared for delivery Wednesday at Georgetown University. Excerpts of the speech were obtained by the Associated Press.
Now that's what I call some seriously contorted reasoning.

A couple of points. I thought I heard Brit Hume today characterize the flip flop as occuring within paragraphs. He was for more troops before he was for less troops!
Whatever, Kerry uses a time honored political tool here. He steals a page from the opposition's playbook. The commanders have been predicting (for a long time) a troop drawdown will be starting soon. I know the 3rd ID is soon to start packing it up to return home and from what I can see at Global Security I see no division replacing the 3rd ID (at least entirely).
It will be up to the Iraqis to finish off the terrorists, there is no one who denies that. It is apparent that the Iraqi Army and Police are quickly coming up to standards and from what I gather many Iraqi units depend on the US for logistics, they fight well and in a disciplined manner. Logistics though is not as easy as one thinks. Get the terrorism down to a certain level, brin the Iraqi army up to a level and then start to draw down. Very simple actually.
It is funny, they talk about no plan and yadda yadda yadda, but when asked about their plan it almost always exactly identical to the President's.

The reason Dems/libs are demanding a timeline is that they need a way to quantitatively say that Iraq is a failure. If a timeline was established, the next step is for them to hope that the timeline would not be met providing excellent stats to back up their false claim that Iraq is failure. Currently, the only quantitative fact they have is the death count which is why it's being exploited as much as it is.

The confusion over raisins or virgins is because of the lack of vowels in written Arabic. That means that many words can be translated in more than one way. In either case some who probably choose raisins over virgins, I myself have little use for the latter.

Good case John. Arabic is an archaic language that is more contextual than definitive, and many words can have dual meanings simply because there are so few options for pronunciation due to the lack of vowels. English has many synonyms but this is mainly due to the fact that it is a hodgepodge language and has combined many different elements of syntax, context, and definition from about half a dozen different languages. Arabic simply lacks the complexity of English because the world in which it developed was very simple and didn't require a lot of explanation, hence the contextual nature.

A Note to Fellow Academic Bloggers: Follow Chomsky's Lead
I'm just checking in to let you all know that I am alive. I appreciate the work Howie, See-Dubya, Vinnie, Mike Pechar, Traderrob, Chris Short, Bluto, & the Demosophist have been doing in my absence. It looks like my book project may go a little longer than I anticpated, but only by a couple of weeks. I will be back, so please have patience.
What have I learned from writing this thing? Absolutely nothing. Oh, except, never write a book-length manuscript before submitting chapters to your editor. Trust me on this one.
On another topic, Spoons says goodbye to blogging. Wait, you mean Spoons was a lawyer? I never knew that.
This reminds me of a bit of advice I've been meaning to relay to academic bloggers: follow Chomsky's lead.
Follow Chomsky, you say, why that's an odd bit of advice coming from the Right?
Indeed it is. What I mean by that is you need to separate your academic work from your polemic work. Chomsky, as you may know, is a noted linguist. But, is Chomsky famous because he is a linguist? No. Please name his linguistic theory? He is famous because he is a critic of U.S. foreign policy. He is not an IR specialist nor does he have any training in political science. His tenure at MIT is based on his linguistic work, not on his foreign policy analysis. His foreign policy analysis is basically a polemic shaped by an ideology and world view. It is blogging before the advent of blogs.
If you are an academic blogger, follow Chomsky's lead and do not blog on your field of expertise. This may come as quite a shock to some of my readers, but I am not an IR specialist nor is my academic work related--even peripherally--to the Global War on Terror and Islamofascist ideologies.
In my role as a blogger I am just like you: I am a citizen journalist.
So, note to fellow bloggers in academia: leave the "expert opinions" to the peer reviewed journals. As for your blog, keep it simple, know its limitations, and do not tout your academic credentials in order to give some authority to your pontifications.
As for that last recommendation, do not follow Chomsky's lead. I'm not sure that it's Chomsky's fault that his followers rely on the logical fallacy of resorting to authority when quoting him. You can't say Chomsky's theories are stupid, they say, Chomsky works at MIT. As if the fact that Chomsky works at MIT as a linguist gives his theories on why U.S. foreign policy is (and has always been) bad mmmmmkay, some extra credibility.
The truth is that I started blogging using the name "Dr. Rusty Shackleford" as a joke. Give Dale Gribble a Ph.D. and this is what you get. Only recently have I begun to realize how much faith people put in that "Dr." aspect of my fictional name. Ultimately, the validity of this blog rests not on my education level or my professional activitiy, but on the quality of the posts and the facts or theories presented therein.
I don't post on my academic area of expertise for the very same reason Chomsky does not lecture outside of MIT on his: I know the difference between peer reviewed theories put under academic scrutiny and theories about world politics driven by my ideology. Hopefully, the latter--my opinions about the war on terror--are accurate. What they definitely are not, though, are rigorously thought out analysis in the same manner as my academic work is. None of my posts--as far as I can tell--has ever produced a hypothesis that any one -- as far as I can tell -- has tested.
So, to fellow bloggers in academia remember what your blog is and what it is not. It is a place to post random thoughts and observations. It is a place to stroke your own ego. It is a place to editorialize. It is a place to say inane, meaningless, and occasionally offensive things. It is a place where on a rare occasion you might just get an important point across. However, it is not a place to further your academic career nor is it a place that your credentials have any meaning.
Blogs are the great levellers of our day. Whether auto-mechanic or nuclear physicist, the opinions of both are of equal importance in the blogosphere. Blogs have made Chomskys of us all. And that, believe it or not, is a good thing.

Howie, are you sure? The Iranian article you quote said the Iranian president made those comments "Wednesday," as in today. You're saying that the Canadian official made comments on NPR yesterday. So, how could he make comments to "take advantage" of the Iranian presidents comments, when they hadn't even been said yet?
Despite how this might read, I'm not trying to be an asshole. I'm just saying, like before, I highly doubt Canada is using the Iranian president's comments to "take advantage" of anything. Condi was in town, that's why they're bringing it up with her.

Sorry if you misunderstood me. I went over there and rummaged around. Crap. It's quite Ok Venom Good point. However I did hear a Canadian official say they thought they could get a better deal with the US than they could have otherwise with all the other stuff going on. Not taking advantage so to speak but they thought that the time was right to push the US. It got me to thinking about all the distractions with the Plame case Delay so on and so forth. I wonder how many other countries see that and think now is the time we can get away with stuff. Just a thought I had. If you don't agree thats fine. I felt we should consider that maybe we might get all distracted with some issues that while not totally bunk could take away from either the will or the time to effectively deal with bigger issues. I had never thought that another country would consider our internal problems as on opportunity to get a better deal or maybe a good time to get away with stuff. Seemed logical though with a weakened adminstation and a ruling party thats at odds with itelf so I wanted to put that out there for thought. Not so much that one was related to the other but maybe many countries see a crack in our armor due to domsetic squabbles. Like I said it was a new idea to me so I just tossed it in there.

I don't mean any disrespect, but the radical Muslims(including OBL) say that the driving force behind their movement is to reintroduce the Caliphate. Whether they think that the Caliphate may be in a better position to destroy Israel is a logical conclusion, but the Islamists have complaints that predate the birth of the nation of Israel.
The Sunnis want the Caliphate to recapture all the land that was lost to Christian Europe(Spain and much of the Balkans and the old Soviet Union) after it had been conquered by Muslim invaders from 670 through 1700.

I just like to make a point about Israel, in my opinion they pushing the envelope in gaining more territory, and in doing so giving exactly those radicals fuel to rise up even more. It is that Israel is trying to gain more land and nobody is calling them back strongly enough, that means the US and the European union. That is what angers the Muslims! And I can understand that!

Seems they figured out what we already knew - virtually all the "journalists and reporters" in Iraq are holed up in that one location and "phoning in" their material from that location according to their own personal agenda and biases.
the MSM attitude is actually kinda strange. They are opposed to US policy/operations - but also terrified of the enemy and what they stand for.
I'm not going to shed any tears over dead MSM in theater. I have absolutely no respect for them. They save and direct their biases and attacks at the US & military
for several reasons but the single most important (unspoken) is that the US is the ultimate "safe" target.

WTW Cube Farm Living at Ground Zero.
A while back I told you about having to make our cubicles all neat and stuff. I had to take down the tower of stupidity. I gave some big speech how it was going back up. Well there have been some problems. First the tower was deconstructed leaving a large empty area in my cube. The teenage mutant frogs and the lizards were in charge of grounds keeping and damaged two philodendrons. While I’m nursing them back to health Aussie decides to put his apple core in there for fun. Killed them suckers dead. Then Quailman and Johnny Bravo who were in charge of the redesign and construction can’t decide how many spires go on top or if the base is protected against flying “yogurt lid of death” projectiles. This has resulted in weeks of delay and haggling, meanwhile the
empty spot just sits there. Roy looks so lonely up there on his magnet without characters in the Tower of Stupidity to keep him company. It just doesnÂ’t feel right. On other news Jack Frost visited Bumfuct Egypt for the first time day a full 10 days late. I siphoned off a fifth of that home made wine last weekend. Had to be tested you know. Good stuff, IÂ’ll bottle err uh plastic jug that this weekend.

Wal-Mart Attacked
In an effort to reduce employee health care costs and enhance profitability, a
memo recommending the hiring of more part-time workers and discouraging the hiring of unhealthy people was drafted for submittal to the Wal-Mart Board of Directors. In draft form, the memo was intercepted and anonymously sent to
Wal-Mart Watch, a union-backed activist group, which claims that a 'secret memo' was uncovered. On the other hand, it appears that Wal-Mart just considered the memo to be an internal document which was freely released in updated form when it was asked for.
Nonetheless, the union-backed team at Wal-Mart Watch is attempting to demonize Wal-Mart in its seemingly reasonable attempt to develop ideas and methods to reduce health care costs. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything wrong with part-time workers or discouraging the hiring of unhealthy workers. Nor do I see anything wrong with trying to enhance profitability.
Without scrutinizing the Wal-Mart memo, it's impossible to determine the reasonableness of the proposed changes. On the surface, it appears to reflect nothing more than a day in the operation and administration of a business. Unfortunately, and I've witnessed it already, the mainstream media have been characterizing the memo as an indication of a sinister and evil conspiracy to discriminate and subjugate.

You have never lived in a small town where Wal-Mart moves in and runs all the retail off. I am legally blind. I worry that I would not be welcome in the world where Wal-Mart picks and chooses people based on health care cost. My wife as asthma. She would also not be welcome I bet. I hope you and your family never have to deal with health problems. If you do, remember, Wal-Mart doesn't want you. What employer is next?

Clearly reading comprehension is old skool. The memo was not "freely" distributed. The memo was distributed when it was specifically asked for. Really though that is not what's important in this article. Let me point them out for you.

This is an article, not about some labor union thing, this is an article about the largest retailer in the United States struggling with health care costs that are rising at 15% a year! This is an inside view of the types of descisions that go on - this is business 101.

Kelly - I'm not unsympathetic to your situation, however, I sense that your attitude towards Wal-Mart was solidified prior to the latest memo. My contention is that Wal-Mart isn't doing anything that another company wouldn't do. Wal-Mart is unfairly demonized because it's non-union.

my Father-in-law told me that a turbine engine that took 7 hours to strip down in their Texas plant (Non-Union) took 5 workdays in the California plant (Union)
He said their work was constantly interrupted because they could not carry parts to an X-ray machine, or measuring machines because the Union manager would insist that another plant worker would have to pick up the parts, and take it to their destination for them, when my Father-in-law said he would do it himself, the Union manager would repeat the same mantra:
This is union here Buddy, you're taking another mans job
He said that was the last time he volunteered to go out there to help do an engine breakdown, and that shortly after that the company opened another plant in Mexico where it was cheaper for them to do repairs.
No wonder some companies choose to outsource.

While I have no love for unions, who have almost single-handedly destroyed American industry, (as per Marx's plan), I cannot take sides with Wal-Mart, whose employees are only slighty better treated than the Chinese sweatshop workers whose near-slave labor produced products they sell.
I saw Wal-Mart move into my area two decades ago and systematically turn all three towns in the county into ghost towns through their rapacious business practices. Family owned businesses that had been there for a hundred years were almost all boarded up, with the few survivors left to sell gas, beer and cigarettes. Wal-Mart is a plague upon the land, and anyone who shops there deserves to lose their job to Chinese prison labor.

Poor H. Lee Scott, send him a dollar he is paid 17.5 million dollars a year. The first thing Mr. Scott sould do is take responsibility for the memo. Fire the person who wrote the memo. and apologize to all the associates who work for this pitiful excuse for a Chineese 10 cent store. The managers and not professional just 90 day wonders with no back bone. They follow Mr. Scott like sheep.
Mr. Scott when will the company evaluat people on their abilities rather than the color of their nose. We have some people who work at Wal Mart and if the store manager would stop suddenly they would have a brown ring around their neck. Does anyone want to know why Wal-Mart wants to raise the minimum wage? Because it would hurt small businesses, that's why. Wally World could absorb a little extra payroll cost with ease, but most mom & pops would have to lay off or close up, thereby broadening the Evil Empire's market share. Wal-Mart should be prosecuted under the anti-trust laws, and broken up just like Ma Bell and Standard Oil.

I shop at the local "Walmart Grocery Store" which, for those whom do not have them are just like the Grocery section in the Walmart SuperStore but freestanding.
Sure they're hurting the competition here, Albertson's already closed one of their stores in our city, however they're also a large corporation and that's the nature of competition, and it's not like we have a single family owned Grocery store here anyway.
Interestingly when people complain about Walmart taking jobs and peoples livelyhood, do you feel the same way about stores with automated checkouts?
I'm not sure about most states but here Walmart, HomeDepot, Lowes, Albertsons, Target have automated scanners that you use to checkout your own merchandise, this of course save the stores about 8 checkout workers, and 1 manager per shift, many times a day, effectively replacing workers with "robots" (hah who said the 1950's campy comic books were wrong?)
This I am sure is leading us down a road to where there will eventually be hardly any people in stores, by removing customer service Corporations can increase their profit margin. For those whom think that could never happen: remember at one time in this country, you could get your gas pumped for you, someone to clear your table at a fast food resturant, and someone to bag your groceries. Now of course, you pump your own gas, take your own tray to a waste receptacle, and now you have the pleasure of not only bagging your own groceries, but checking them out yourself too.
While some people concider the above as conveniences for the lazy, they also kept a lot of people gainfully employed. When they were removed it wasn't like the savings were passed to you, but were pocketed as increased profits.
It looks like we can look forward to shopping in stores with a skeleton crew, perhaps just kept round to maintain security, and deal with paperwork and management issues. Walmart could replace the "Greeter" with a motion detection monitor of a smiling actor, welcoming you to the store as you walk in, automatically dispensed shopping carts.
They already have price scanners in the store you can check your own prices, and radiotag technology that activates inventory control in the need they're running low on an item.
They're already taking automation to the extreme (in our Walmart store carpark they have a filling station that is completely unmanned, just place your ATM/Debit/Credit card in)
It makes you wonder if stores like Walmart won't eventually consume themselves, the more jobs they destroy (including their own, by automation) they're effectively destroying the consumers who are now unemployed and cannot afford to shop there? Seeing as it's a relatively new trend, time will tell.

During the Battle of Leyte Gulf (of which the Battle of Surigao Strait was a part), from 22-27 October, 1944 - six days - the United States suffered 3,000 men killed in action.

The Battle of Surigao Strait is more properly thought of as the night battleship action south of Leyte Gulf, where Adm Oldendorff's battle group "crossed the T" of the Japanese Southern Force. We sank 2 Jap battleships (IIRC) and some cruisers and destroyers in what would be the last battleship-on-battleship fight. (2 of our battleships had been sunk at Pearl Harbor, and, resurrected, got some revenge.)
The heroic destroyer attack took place off Samar, on the next morning.

Thank you for posting this article. My grandfather, who passed away a few years ago, was a gunner's mate and plankowner of the Samuel B. Roberts. He was a hard-as-nails Navy man and one of the few survivors of the assault of the Japanese navy. If you're interested, there's a great book called "The Spirit of the Sammy B" about the battle written from the perspective of the small destroyer escort.

Actually John, we were maneuvered into the war. I found it especially interesting that there was a program on the History Channel last night about exactly that subject, and they had more information, honestly and objectively presented, than I had seen before. There were numerous reports from military intelligence about the impending attack, and all were ignored so that the Japanese would strike the first blow. Pearl Harbor was sacrificed by a liberal socialist president so that we could enter the war on Russia's side.
It wasn't about saving Britain or the Jews, it was about saving Roosevelt's buddy Stalin, whom Roosevelt referred to as "good old Joe" and said that he was "misunderstood". Roosevelt, our second liberal president, after Wilson, was also the second president to get us into a global war, and like the first war and the ruinous Treaty of Versailles, after the second, the groundwork was laid for decades more of misery and conflict by Roosevelt's and Trumans capitulations to the Communists.
The times we live in now, the troubles we endure, are all products of the schemings and machinations of liberals, socialists, and so-called progressives. Liberals delenda est.

I have no problem with your overall theme Improbulus that Roosevelt maneuvered the Japanese into taking the first shot, but I do have some quibbles.
I do not believe it was obvious the Japanese were going to hit Pearl Harbor. Quite clearly intelligence knew the Japanese were up to something, knew an internal Japanese deadline had come and gone, but did not have uh what is the phrase? Actionable intelligence, that's it.
Lincoln also maneuvered the rebels to take the first shot as well.
I think Roosevelt wanted to stop Hitler more than anything else.

Right on both counts. Roosevelt was much more interested in the Germans, and in fact he was already at war with the Germans in the North Atlantic. The problem he had was that the Germans were not interested in declaring war on the United States unless Japan entered the war on the Axis side.
German submarines had already been fired upon and sunk by US combat ships, and they had basically done nothing but pontificate. The Japanese were the key to Germany declaring war on the US, and Roosevelt knew it.
This is, of course, subject to debate, but it's pretty apparent that Roosevelt was aware of a likely Japanese attack on US interests in the Pacific. Several warnings were sent out to various regional commanders in the Pacific, so obviously the Americans knew the Japanese were up to something. Many intelligence reports indicated movement of Japanese warships and troop transports.
Personally, I think Roosevelt knew an attack was imminent and did nothing to stop it. I don't think he knew it would be at Pearl Harbor, but that still does not excuse him. But he needed the Japanese to attack and get the US in the war. The German-Japanese treaty previously signed by the parties pretty much guanranteed the German entry on the side of their ally, Japan. Roosevelt had his wish, and we all know what followed. Basically, the end of the West.

We did not know for certain the nature of the Japanese aggression. Roosevelt was one of a small number of people with access to the decoded intercepts. I have always found it hard to believe that all these military men sacrified their brothers in arms for an excuse to get into the war, and all of them went to their graves without tellling the "real story". If we would have smashed the Japanese fleet the day before they attacked us America would have still gone to war and the Pacific war would have been pretty much over. If we would have alerted our Army Air Corps one hour before the attack over 50 fighters could have met the Japanese planes and we still would have gone to war. It is possible that we wanted to cover up the fact that we had broke the Japanese diplomatic code. That would have been a hard decision, but one still focused on the saving of more lives later on, at Coral Sea, Midway and other battles. From what I have read most of the cryptographers thought the Japanese would take out the over extended British and Dutch and leave us out of it, thus forcing us to be "the agressors". The messages to the Japanese diplomats, if I remember correctly, said that they were going to war, not "we are attacking Pearl Harbor". We could have handled the road to war better, but the Imperial Japanese are the ones to blame for Pearl Harbor. All they had to do was develop an alternative to imported oil and they wouldn't have needed to kill millions to get to the Indonesian oil fields. Or, maybe they could have not invaded Vietnam and then we wouldn't have cut off their oil supply.

This post was not about numbers, it was not about "playing bingo" with the dead. I did this post to provide a historical perspective as to what this country was once willing to pay in order to secure its freedom and continued existence. Without that perspective, we run the risk of letting the propagandists of the other side form the picture in people's minds of what this war is about.
And it is more than apt to compare this conflict with WWII. Islamofascism and Nazism are nearly identical in their respective quests. It's even apt to compare this conflict with Vietnam, given that both are rife with spectacular Allied military victories that are twisted and spun to make them seem like defeat.
We owe our knowledge of the truth about Vietnam to diligent historians. Militarily, the United States crushed the enemy. North Vietnam suffered over 1 million casualties in that war. That truth wasn't consumed by the pubic at the time, they ended up demoralized, and were unwilling to see the victory through to the end.
We no longer have the luxury of time, my friends. History needs to be written now, in the face of this hostile media, a political party that no longer stops playing at the waters edge, and a public that consumes it's news in 30 second sound bites.

Unfortunately comparing bodybag count from one war to the next, is falling directly into the game they want you to play.
Irrespective of the validity of your point, even if the count was twenty people it is a large price to pay.
Two thousand families lives will be changed forever, Husbands, Wives, Fathers, Mothers, Brothers and sisters will never be coming back, forget the numbers game large or small.
The question we have to ask is who is making their sacrifice less? the ones who continually count the numbers, and use those figures to warrant a complete pull-out leaving Iraqi's to be killed by the terrorists in their midst, not only undermining the mission the soldiers died for, but stealing the honor of those who died to complete it.
The point is, 2,000 or 2 dead soldiers we should make sure their sacrifice wasn't in vain.

Dave's got it right. A sacrifice is a sacrifice, regardless of the relative size of other sacrifices that may have predated it. You're just obscuring the issue by bringing up WWII.

perhaps dave is right, but back during WWII there were rules to be followed that the press had to follow....there reports were looked over for any sensitive material and censored if needed....no dead American GI's were allowed to be shown in pictutes to the American public....sure dead enemy soldiers were fine but no GI's and thats fine and is how it should be....if the press tried all the crap they do now , their offices would have been raided by the FBI and all those enemy supporting reporters,photographers and editors would have faced charges of treason....they may have been allowed some lenency but not what they absuse these days and its ridiculuos what the press LIES and TWISTS about....ive never seen such horrible "reporting" if you can even call it that anymore...its more like some fantasy and science fiction reports....at least back during WWII the reporters and photographers went right into the action with the GI's and could face capture and death...these days the majority of them hide back at the hotels and get "reports" and the "facts" from the enemy terrorists and their supporters....look at what Walter Cronkite and Ernie Pyle did during WWII....they went right up to the front lines, not hide in some chauteu back in Paris during the entire war and make up reports or recieve propaganda from Hitler and use that as the truth......its very sad and sickening what the press does now....they shouldnt be allowed to hide behind the freedom of the press when what they report are either totally made up stories or ones that support the terrorists....traitors all....they should be shot when its so obvious they have lied that a blind man could tell that its a lie.....thats why i hardly even look at the papers anymore...i get my news here online where i can cross reference stories and the idiots at the MSM dont seem to know that we have that power now...dont they ever learn???

All durring WWII the MSM did report on the critics of the Democratic Regime. I have to agree with Dave. As long as we make such comparisons they'll keep comparing this war as well to Vietnam, WWII and others. This war has it's own context which should never be confused with any other. It is unique. Counting the dead should only be applied to the enemy. And the MSM will never do that. It would look like we're winning.

Problem was that last week when I returned to St. Louis, Mo. my chest felt funny. Like a pressure that didn't make sense. Went to Doctor for stress test. Flunked. Then to my doctor in Slidell, La. A short confersation with the St Louis Cardio. resulted in me in the operating room for a Quad by-pass. Sometimes life can be a bitch when you have a few bucks in the bank. Joking. Maybe! Medical science in America is tops. Damn I love this country. Up in 1 day, home in 5 days and mowing pastures on my Kybota in 6 days. Only in America.
Looking at Waveland, Bay St. Louis and Pass christian, and Bay St Louis Ms, just makes me sick. Ya'll have to understand that Pass Christian, Ms was one of my favorite places in the world. Gorgeous antibellun homes on the beach 100 years old. IT AIN'T THERE ANYMORE. Just concrete slabs with laundry, cars and boats in the few trees left. My home is gone. Along with all the things I have been saving for my children and grandchildren. How do you replace pictures of your parents and grandparents when they are no longer with this world.
Time to cowboy up. Told the wife I'm heading south come Friday to rebuild better than before. Never liked that house anyway. Damn thing faced the east and the morning sun was a pain. New one will face the south.

Welcome back, and I am glad to find you in the best of health. My wife's family is from New Hebron, Ms. and I have spent several weeks of almost every summer at her grandmother's old houseplace. We would always go down to Biloxi and stay there, but with the gambling interests and all the traffic, we decided to stay in Bay St. Louis two years ago. I am sorry to here almost everything is gone. What a shame! Do you know if the Jefferson Davis home survived the hurricane? We always liked to go there to.
Missed you while you were gone, have had a fuss or two, nothing that couldn't be handled, but am old enough to appreciate all the help I can get. Ha!

Jesusland: My son in law tried to get to the coast between Biloxi and Gulfport but they had it blocked off to sightseers. Don't know how the Jeff Davis place fared. The Grand Casino is across the street from where is was. The President Casino is sitting on top of what's left of the Holiday Inn. Mother nature placed the Casinos where they should have been to begin with. All bridges at Bay St Louis are gone. Next week I plan to take my boat down the Pearl River to the gulf. Then I can run to Waveland, Pass Christian, Bay St Louis, Gulfport and Biloxi. I understand Waveland and Pass Christian aren't there anymore. I'll get a view from the water and take pictures.
My place is a mess. I got tired of my wife and daughters going thru the remains, so I hired a track hoe and dozer and had it all buried. Not a trace left of a 75 year old colonial. Had a crew cut up the downed trees and move them with dozers. What the storn didn't tear up the dozers did. Place looks like a war zone.
Oh well, Now's the time to do it right the first time.
Can't find a hotel or rent a house in 100 miles. Frankly I wish the storm chasers and Fema would go leave and let us work out our problems. At least we would have motels to stay in. Fema is giving away so much money no one will work. I bought a mobile home to live in until I can rebuild. They call it a manufactured house. I call it a trailer. Switching from Wild Turkey to beer. Trailer trash at last.
Scott said he would take emergency leave and come home. I said why? The farm looks like Iraq so might as well stay there.
I have a close friend in the construction business. He is paying unskilled laborers $250.00 per day working 7 days a week. Can't find any help. Fema is paying pickup owners $3.75 per mile to bring travel trailers down from Indiana. They say they need 120,000 at Baton Rouge staging area.
800 miles @$3.75 per mile is $3000.00 per day. One day up, one day back. $1500.00 per day for driving your pickup. Not bad.
One of my neighbors got a job as an inspector for Fema. After a trailer is set in place and hooked up he looks at it. Says he's making $3100.00 per week and they pay him $90.00 per day for using his old pickup.
I wish to say thanks to all you hard working people paying the bill for this.

I heard the Davis home survived with lots of damage and the contents were pretty much lost. Especially paintings and paper records. Lots of history lost bu thte old place was built you know then they built things right.
